Cisco has sent a tough signal to VMware, a close partner which has more and more edged into its core networking business. In spirit, Cisco said to VMware, "You desire to go after our core business? Then we will take a bite out of yours.
VMware & Cisco have fallen into a love-hate connection. On the one hand, they are close partners. Cisco's blockbuster server creation united Computing System, leans greatly on tech from VMware & EMC, the storage creator which owns a majority stake in VMware. The three of them back a scheme called VCE which sells a well-liked data-center-in-a-box product called V block.
But when VMware bought fledgling networking startup Nicira for $1.26 billion last summer, it told the world that VMware is prepared to turn over the networking trade, much like it changed the server business. And that means taking on Cisco.
I was one of the some people that voted against VMware combination," Open Stack board associate Boris Renski told Business Insider. "Finally VMware didn't join to help the plan, but to counteract & subdue it. Cisco is getting prepared to yank out its own interior deployments of VMware's software & use Open Stack instead, and is doing the similar for a handful of its strategic clients, says Renski.
